The Senior Payroll Supervisor supervises staff and ensures accurate, timely and effective completion of staff responsibilities. Oversees Lead payroll staff in all areas of garnishments, special payrolls, employment verifications, W2 requests, PTO reports and processes, vacation research, union processes and off-cycle corrections. Provides professional level of customer service to all regions serviced by the Western Operation Center (WOC).  Utilizes Oracle PeopleSoft HRMS skills and knowledge. Relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals and tasks. Determines resolution for routine payroll-related issues. Coordinates with payroll management on assigned duties and any special projects or initiatives.

  1. Provides supervision and assistance to assigned Lead payroll staff in all areas related to garnishment processes, training and tracking logs.
  2. Resolves issues to ensure the accurate and timely completion of garnishments, including coordination with other Supervisors, WOC staff and EOC payroll department.
  3. Manages and monitors the Legal garnishments daily.
  4. Other areas of supervision include processing special payrolls, off-cycle requests, union processes, vacation processing, Time Off/PTO reports and processes, direct deposit and pay card setups and audits, employment verifications and W2 requests.
  5. Requires knowledge of critical job functions in payroll and ability to aid or backfill for other regional supervisors and staff. 
  6. Collaborates with colleagues and Payroll Manager on providing additional staff support, as needed.
  7. Participates in interview process for new hires, prepares work schedules to ensure appropriate coverage, and trains team members on new or enhanced operation procedures and policies. 
  8. Assists in monitoring workloads and evaluating direct reports for performance and development plans.
  9. Facilitates team and one-on-one meetings with direct reports to ensure team members acquire necessary skills and performance attributes, in line with departments goals. 
  10. Assists in the testing, review and support of PeopleSoft tax and system upgrades to assure that testing is complete in assigned area.   
  11. Assists with special projects and daily operational matters, including quarterly and year end processes, written procedures, special reports and/or queries.
  12. Effectively addresses payroll related issues and employee requests both written and verbally.
  13. Works with all levels in the Payroll department and all customers serviced by the department in a positive and supportive manner.
  14. Participates in meetings and collaborates with other Supervisors and Manager positively and effectively by sharing of ideas within the department.
  15. Assists Manager and Director as requested. Additional duties assigned, as required.

Job Requirements


Additional qualifications may be specified and receive preference, depending upon the nature of the position.

  • Minimum of 5 years of payroll processing experience
  • Ability to effectively supervise team members, work as a member of that team and organize work activities for other members of that team
  • Ability to analyze/interpret complex data; interpret day-to-day business objectives, preparation/execution of operational practices and work programs
  • Results oriented individual with strong customer service skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to adapt to conflicting deadlines and priorities established by company demands


  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Accounting or equivalent
  • Two years’ payroll supervisory experience or equivalent management skills
  • Experience in a shared service environment and solid understanding of payroll cycles
  • Experience with Oracle PeopleSoft payroll systems preferred
  • Experience with Oracle PeopleSoft Query reporting preferred

  • Thorough understanding of standard office procedures and practices 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of mathematical concepts including computation of rates, ratios, percentages, averages and reconciliation

  • Demonstrated proficiency in various PC applications including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and/or other database software packages
